All about Kanban
Kanban (Japanese kan = signal, ban = card) s an agile, industry-independent project management method originally developed by Toyota Motor Corporation as production control system.
The Kanban method allows you to optimize your entire process management. It identifies potential bottlenecks in your process. Tasks of a project are shown as cards. All project-related tasks are visualized as cards on the board.
A Kanban board represents your Daylite project or opportunity based on your process steps as a horizontal board. Each process step is represented by a column that you can name yourself. While working on a project or opportunity, each of your tasks (cards) go through the first process step on the left up to the final process step on the right on your board.
Meaning of tasks (cards)
As mentioned, each Daylite task is shown as card on your board.
Tasks can stand for products or services that go through the same process steps. Participants of a seminar can be represent as tasks as well, if the same process steps are needed for these in preparation for the seminar.
Columns and different perspectives
Imagine that each column of your board represents a specific step of your process for a project or opportunity.
The columns of your board do have corresponding tasks statuses. Feel free to define on your own the columns' names and statuses.
A board basically consists of three columns:
- Open
- In Progress
- Done
The possibility of giving several columns (process steps) the same status (e.g. In Progress) gives you the chance to track the progress of each tasks even more precisely.
If you write e.g a blog article for your website, you might have more than one column (process step) with the status In Progress:
- Research, Status In Progress
- Write article, Status In Progress
- Review, Status In Progress
Example of using the Kanban Method
You just need one single task (e.g. writing blog article) that you move from one column to the next depending on the process step.
In addition, you can group your Kanban board by different criteria to see your project or opportunity from different perspectives:
- Grouped by User
- Grouped by Priority
- Grouped by task lists
- Grouped by Category
Delegate a task to another user at the same time when you move it to the next process step on your board. Therefore, just group your board by user. The user to whom the task was delegated to will get automatically a Daylite notification.
